Brainstorm

It was quite hard for me to choose my concept. I was mainly choosing between game design and coding. But I decided to go ahead with coding as this touches ny personal feelings because I recently discovered that new reality that we get in with coding, so I am sharing feelings and thoughts I got from my own actual experience.

Storyboard

Project description.

Thinking about the concept for my stop motion clip I was first of all thinking about what I love about media design and what I would like to share with other people. I am interested in quite different fields of media design and found it quite hard to choose the particular field I want to concentrate on. But the idea came into my mind when I was in bed, just about to sleep. I decided to share my feelings about the most amazing thing I learned at uni – coding. When I found out that coding is one of the core papers for media design students I was really disappointed and scared. I was not really confident with computers and even the name “coding” used to make me freak out. But when I actually started learning it I found out that coding is not as scary as it seems. Even though it really was hard for me, I had lot of fun creating different things using code. I learned not only how to code but more important how to love and enjoy coding. For my stop motion clip I am using an actual processing application that I made for final project for creative coding. Even though I use my imagination for the video and show the person physically getting inside that amazing virtual reality, I like the idea of using a media design product that actually exists, moreover, made by myself. So this project is kind of advertising my coding application, which I think is a good practice for me as for a future designer. Besides I am showing some of my fantasies about the future when I will be able to make stuff that we can physically interact with. For me coding became a personal trouvaille of a new world where I can create and make my fantasies real and this project was a great opportunity to share my discovery with others.

Final video

This is my final video. I changed my sound. (It is still rainforest noises, but I chose a louder track because the previous one was way too quite even when i chnaged the audio settings while exporting a mov. file) I made my snail get out of the shell after the stick disappeared, so the video has a proper ending. I also put my name and reference to the sound sourse.

development of my video

Now much more is going on in my video. I added a stick that touches the snail and then it hides in the shell. I think it worked very well and added more personality to my cute little character.

This is my new development of the video. Now the track apears nicely and I think it looks quite natural. I made tiny letters appear one by one (not by groups like before). And they appear not after the snail, bt we can see it underneeth as well. I also added sound (noises of the rainforest), which I think was chosen well and works successfully. Sounds of rainforest make the right impression and my little snail looks natural.

My first experimentation with the snail track. I think it's a good start, bt it looks bloapy. So it needs to be developed.

Scetches and brainstorm development

On the scetches above I was working on the shape of my coke bottle and on the way how it is going to be visually presented. The top picture is a development of the storyboard.

I tryed to arrange my frames gorizontally on my stoaryboard, but it didn't work to well because the frames sould be squares (as we are restricted by 500*500 size for the actual flash video) and there is now way to organize them horizontally in such a way that i would have enough space for comments.

First ideas for the snail.

This is another draft. While drawing it I felt
like I really need to invert the colors, so it would feel more like a discoclub.

This Is my first draft for the "disco" storyboard.

This are my very first scetches and ideas. Some of them were successful, but some of them were not so I replaced them with new ideas.

Excercise 1

Kerning excercise helped me to get a better undestanding of aestetics of typography. I found it quite interesting that by simply hatching the space between letters you can not only see, but also feel how letters and space between them work and interact with each other, and what effects that interaction makes.

INDIVIDUAL WORK

For my individual work I turned to post-impressionism because I am quite interested in this movement. I am   particularly  interested in oeuvre of Vincent Van Gogh as I consider him one of the most talented artists of the 19th century. As a precedent for my individual work I decided to use his drawing “Starry night” (June, 1889) because I find the drawing technique he uses for this drawing quite interesting and unusual. The use of rough hatches very well expresses van Gogh’s unique style. I also find really amazing that if you take a very close look at the drawing, it seems harsh and has really strong contrast between hatches and the background. But if you look at the picture from the distance, It creates really nice and smooth texture and really soft feeling.
